Basic Chemistry for Operators for CE

This course teaches basic chemistry skills that will enhance operator understanding and subsequent learning. Topics covered include specific gravity, atomic structure, number and weight, units and measurement, chemical reactions, pH, solutions and suspensions and more. Topics are applied to water and wastewater operations in a practical manner.

Successful completion of this course awards 1.25 Contact Hour. Since this course is used for continuing education, some of the navigation features in the play bar have been disabled in order to prevent fast-forward movement through the course.

Identify and apply common units of measurement
Calculate unit conversions
Apply scientific notation
Define basic chemistry terms such as atom, element, compound, ion, isotope
Sketch and label a simple atom
Define and apply atomic weight, atomic number and mole
Read and apply chemical symbols and equations
Calculate formula weight
Define and list the properties of acids and bases
Identify common chemicals and their effect on pH
Define and apply the concept of pH
Define and apply solutions and the parts therof
Define and apply suspensions, colloids, electrolytes, conductivity
Perform calculations using the two and three normal equations
Identify and describe basic analytical processes and quality control measures
